Why do animals have ranges?

Every species on the planet has places it can survive and places it cannot.  We don't find flamingos in the Arctic or polar bears in the tropics.  Why is that?

Our lab focuses on how invertebrates (insects and molluscs) survive low temperature, linking physiological phenomena like freeze tolerance to the existence of poleward range edges.  Our goal is to develop a mechanistic understanding of what drives these range limits so we can better predict how pest and beneficial insect species will respond to changing climates.

We are members of the Comparative Physiology Group in the Department of Zoology and the Biodiversity Research Centre at the University of British Columbia.
