We met up at Spanish Banks this weekend to try and catch the last bits of summer and celebrate the addition of Jess Kennedy (as a new MSc student) and Lauren Gill (as a new Honours student). While we failed at finding sun, we did assemble a fine message to Jarrett who is still riding out the pandemic in Ontario.
Congratulations to our latest grads!
It’s been a busy spring and summer as several of our students have successfully graduated. Zeba Khan is finished her undergraduate degree and independent study. Jess Kennedy successfully defended her thesis entitled “Drivers of plasticity in freeze tolerance in the intertidal mussel Mytilus trossulus” and the very first graduate student to defend from the Marshall Lab—Skye Butterson—had an amazing defense of her thesis entitled “Plasticity of cold-hardiness in the eastern spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana”.
Congratulations to Skye, Zeba, and Jess on a job well done!!
Jarrett in Oklahoma!
Jarrett has just come back from a trip to Oklahoma where he met with our collaborators Cam Siler, Mike Weiser, and Mike Kaspari at the University of Oklahoma on the NEON Macrosystems project!
Welcome to Jess and Brian!
We have two undergraduate students joining us for the summer. Jess Kennedy is funded by a UBC SURE Award and will be studying freeze tolerance in intertidal mussels. Brian Cho is funded by a UBC Work/Learn position and will be helping us keep the lab organized!
Lab family reunion at the Canadian Society of Zoologists
Katie and Skye travelled to Windsor, Ontario for the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society of Zoologists. While there they met up with Katie’s PhD advisor and former labmate Heath MacMillan, and took this extended family photo. Lab cousins everywhere!
Welcome to Jarrett!
We’re happy to announce that Jarrett Blair has started with the Marshall Lab! While Jarrett is originally from Southern Ontario, as you can see below he is rapidly acclimating to conditions in Vancouver. He brings a wealth of knowledge about biodiversity and innovative new ways to measure it.
British Ecological Society Meeting in 2018
Katie made it out to beautiful Birmingham last week for her very first British Ecological Society meeting. She was lucky enough to get a tour of Cambridge with JEB editor Kathryn Knight, who showed her Darwin’s collection of Cambridge beetles!
Entomological Societies in Vancouver!
Skye and Katie both presented posters at the Entomological Society of America/Entomological Society of Canada/Entomological Society of British Columbia meeting in Vancouver this fall. Much entomological fun was had, especially with visits from collaborators and colleagues from far away.
Moving!
The Marshall Lab is moving to the beautiful University of British Columbia this summer. Stay tuned for new photos, and a whole new lab.
Up and running!
It's summer and that's when professors start ticking off things from their To-Do list. Today, we finally got a lab website! Many more things to add, but for now we've at least got a home on the web.
